Pizza in Braille! It might not occur to a sighted person that everyday things – like reading a menu – can be significant challenges for someone who is visually impaired.
To uncover the secrets of the menu, a visually impaired person usually needs a sighted companion when visiting a restaurant. While a waiter can assist in finding a desirable dish, a complete dining experience includes browsing the menu and contemplating the food options.
"Our visually impaired regular customers requested their own menus, and we wanted to meet this need. The menus are printed in the center of Helsinki at the printing house associated with the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired at Iiris Centre" describes Janne Kulovuori, Head of Business unit at Rosso, highlighting the collaboration between Rosso and the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired.
Most often, restaurant menus are intended only for the sighted.
"That's why a visit to Rosso can be particularly memorable for a visually impaired person. Rosso is the only Finnish chain restaurant with a Braille menu," says Kulovuori.
Braille takes up about three times more space than printed text. Rosso's Braille menu is as long as 34 pages.
