Historical dining experiences
The historical dining experiences of Mikkeli, the wartime headquarters city, tell the story of two significant aspects of human history: food and war. Throughout history and across cultures, gathering for a meal has always meant much more than simply satisfying hunger.
Dining has played an important role in international diplomacy and social interaction. Marshal of Finland, Commander-in-Chief and Baron Gustaf Mannerheim was thoroughly familiar with every aspect of formal dining. He understood that every meal had its own place and purpose.
The Commander-in-Chief’s junior adjutant, O. R. Bäckman, checked the lunch and dinner menus in the Kaleva every day and recorded them along with the seating arrangements.
The story behind each historical meal will be presented to guests during the dining experience.
