The style of the 50s is still prevailing in the hotel Vaakuna in Helsinki
Helsinki's most centrally located hotel classic, which was completed for the 1952 Olympics, will be renewed. All rooms, floors and the lobby of Sokos Hotel Vaakuna will be renovated in accordance with the original atmosphere of the building. The work will begin in April 2018 and will be completed in early 2019.
The Vaakuna-Sokos building, considered the main functionalist work of Finnish architect Erkki Huttunen, houses a variety of contemporary original furniture and design items. The hotel's 1950s atmosphere will be maintained in the renovation by adding a touch of modern luxury to its unique style.
"We are planning on making the interior of Vaakuna a combination of contemporary times and respect for its history. We are not aiming for a 50s copy, but will update the interior with respect for the original", explains Tiina Närkki, Interior Architects Fyra Ltd. "A good example are the canopies that will be mounted over the beds in some of the rooms, as a tribute to the main entrance of the magnificent building. Likewise, the peace doves that decorate the relief wall of the hotel lobby will now also be featured on the walls of the rooms."
The original armchairs designed by architect Huttunen and restored in a 1950s style will be welcoming guests in their rooms. The rooms on the ninth floor will continue to be illuminated by the luminaires, also found in the hotel's lobby and restaurant areas, which were designed for the hotel by the famous Finnish designer Paavo Tynell.
The hotel will be renewed in cooperation with the Helsinki City Museum, because some parts of the hotel – such as two top floors – are protected cultural heritage. The City Museum has conducted paint analyses, for instance, in lift lobbies, and they have shown clearly what colours were used in the hotel originally.
"The upgrading of a hotel classic to today's world is a cultural achievement, requiring consideration of the original design language of the building. I look forward to the outcome of the combination of a long past and the design and expertise of today", says Mika Mustasilta, General Manager of Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna.
The floors of the Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna will be renovated, one after the other, as of 2 April 2018. The first renovated floor will be available already in summer 2018. The hotel will function as normal during the renovation work. After the renovation, the room selection will range from compact city twins to stunning suites with balconies and panoramic views.
